A handmade mother’s day card is a wonderful way to show how much you care about the special women in your life.

I decided to embellish the front of my mother’s day card with a simple cross stitch sentiment and with the help of this Cross Stitch Writing Tool website, you can easily generate a personalized message pattern for your own card. Simply select the font and write your message. The website will automatically generate your cross stitch pattern and all you need to do is print it out.

Select some bright embroidery floss, a suitable needle and a small piece of aida cloth.

It always helps to begin your cross stitch project by pinpointing the center of the pattern on your cloth before you start. That way, you know you will have enough cloth around the edges to complete the pattern. Find the center of your cloth by folding it in half lengthwise and widthwise. Mark the center on the back of the cloth with an erasable marker and then count out towards the sides and top/bottom, cross referencing with your pattern.

I like to use an embroidery hoop to keep my fabric taut but you may find you prefer to work without one.

Cross Stitch

Once you have completed your pattern, cut it out using the weave of the cloth to give you straight lines.

Cutting cloth

I adhered my cross stitch pattern to the front of a piece of cardstock, making sure to add some extra adhesive at the edges to prevent fraying. I then added some paper embellishments to my card.

Punching embellishments

First, I cut a strip of colored cardstock and punched it with my Fiskars’ Interchangeable Border Punch.

Gluing embellishments

I also cut a pinwheel using my Fuse Creativity System® mini die and attached it to the front of the card with a colored split pin.

To finish, I used a banner stamp from the new Teresa Collins “Thank You” stamp set on the inside of the card and added a handwritten ‘Happy Mother’s Day’ sentiment.

Handwritten message

Happy Mother’s Day!
