If you visit a party store, you can find plenty of pre-made Mardi Gras decor and prop options for celebrations. These items are good basics, but with a little creativity, time, and a few Fiskars tools, you can turn them into something really festive, fun and memorable for your party guests. Combine all these elements with some lovely papers, candles, and create a very special Mardi Gras inspired table top!
Mardi Gras is something I don’t personally celebrate, and prior to project, I didn’t know too much about this season. It was interesting learning about some of the traditions and symbolism of the celebration, and I enjoyed translating what I learned into this project.
Harlequin Place Mat
Begin by using your favorite paper trimmer to cut twenty-one 3” squares from glittered papers in jewel tones. Be very precise when trimming - just being off by a hair can throw things off later.
Peel the backing off of a 12 x 12 adhesive-backed paper and place it sticky side-up in the center of your cutting mat. Line it up with the grid marks.
Turn your squares so they are “diamonds” and create a harlequin pattern on the paper. Use the grid marks to help guide you.
Create a cross shape with your squares. Some corners of the glittered squares will go slightly beyond your 12 x 12 adhesive square. Embellish the mat with a couple of fleur de lis glittered stickers.
Mardi Gras Party Hats
Start with a basic gold, green, or purple cone party hat. Attach a strand of beads around the base of the hat using a hot glue gun.
Punch a couple of glittered circles and cardstock butterflies to trim the hat. Attach them with hot glue, or adhesive foam dots. Lastly, glue a couple of feathers to the point of the hat.
Mardi Gras Party Mask
Start with a basic mask, and remove the elastic band. Attach a bamboo skewer to the side of the mask using a hot glue gun. Trim your mask with beads, feathers, glittered leaves, a fleur de lis embellishment, and a few punched shapes in Mardi Gras colors.
Roll your cutlery in a napkin, and wind a strand of Mardi Gras beads around it. Add a glittered circle and butterfly and adhere with a dab of hot glue.
Dress your table, with rich linens, add a few metallic votive cups, and set your place settings with all the fabulous party details you just created!
