The person with a focus on efficiency might meticulously pack a wheeled cooler with small, reusable containers of food and head for the picnic table under a park shelter, while the romantic person might fill a wicker basket with sandwiches wrapped in butcher paper tied with twine and a bunch of grapes, grab the quilt off the couch as they leave the house, and head for the grassy spot under a favorite tree. I find myself somewhere in the middle, loving the free-spiritedness of the romantic but needing some organization to temper the nervousness that goes along with my disorganized tendencies.
The projects I share here are adaptable to appeal to both adults and children depending the papers and the Fiskars shapes and designs you choose to use.
Most of the supplies I used for my pretty, practical picnic ideas came from Le Box Boutique, beginning with this Bio-Plus Earth box. I used the Hello stamp from the Teresa Collins Thank You set to stamp the inside of one of the lid flaps.
My sandwiches are packaged in wax paper bags tied with unbleached cotton twine. To add a fun touch, I used the Fuse and the Sun Medium Design Set on wax paper and slipped the die cut shape under the twine. Quick, inexpensive, and pretty!
Individual packages of snack crackers are easy to dress up with a Scalloped Square diecut shape cut folded in half and stapled over the opening in the top of the bag. A quick punch with the Star Lever Punch adds a sweet touch.
This is a also a good recycling project. I repurposed a plastic container from a single-serving coffee for use as a container for chocolate hummus. A circle punched from aluminum foil allows you to reseal the container. Since punching through aluminum foil is suggested for sharpening our punches, this serves as a double-duty project!
Packaging and transporting cupcakes can be messy. Instead of frosting the tops of them, use a small cookie cutter in the center and fill the hole with frosting, containing the mess within the cupcake. A regular size cupcake will fit perfectly in the bottom of a plastic Solo cup.
Punch a scalloped circle from recycled cardboard packaging using the XXXXL Scalloped Circle Lever Punch and notch it, using the Circle PopUp Punch, to make it easier to remove from the cup. This can be covered with a matching shape punched from pretty paper.
These cardboard covers make the containers stackable and easier to transport.
The Fiskars Treatbox Die is a great tool to use for making containers for transporting dry snacks. After die cutting and letter pressing inexpensive white cardstock in one pass, I folded the box up and filled it with chocolate roasted almonds. I sealed the box with an address label stamped with the Sweet stamp from the Teresa Collins Love Stamp Set.
Passing out eating utensils and keeping them all together is an easy task when you slip everything they need in a small glassine bag. Give it a pretty presentation by stapling a letter pressed die cut to the front and tying some bakers twine around it. I used the Curvy Square Medium Design Set for my packets. A punched and stamped tag tied around the neck of a bottled drink finishes off this fun picnic packaging.
Each of these is a quick and easy way to make your picnic pretty yet still keep the preparation practical!
