Sweet Treats for Mardi Gras

Be the star of the party or bring the festive spirit of Mardi Gras home this year with colorful toppers for cupcakes or other sweet treats!

Using a variety of Fiskars punches, you can create these fun and easy paper-crafted toppers. You will need a variety of cardstock and pre-glittered paper, as well as candy/pastry sticks, to get started.

First, cut your candy/pastry sticks to size (if necessary) and set them aside. The Fiskars Craft Scissors (8”) work well for this task.

The first topper is a festive spray with a star in the center. The spray is created by using a 2.5 inch (wide) by 12 inch (long) strip of cardstock.

Cut the paper to size with a paper trimmer and then begin to make vertical cuts along the length of the strip. Either the Micro-Tip Scissors No. 5 or the SureCut Deluxe Craft Paper Trimmer (12”) make easy work of this task.
Keep the cuts approximately the same width. Do not cut all the way through the paper; maintain an uncut portion along the top edge (it will be the bottom edge once the cutting is complete) of the strip.

Once the cuts are all made, roll the strip of paper around the candy/pastry stick. The intact section will be at the bottom and the open fringy part at the top.

When the strip is completely rolled up, add a bit of adhesive on the bottom edge to prevent the strip from unrolling. Gently fan the fringe down and outward and then affix a star punched with the Twinkle Twinkle Extra Large Squeeze Punch from glittered paper to the top of the candy/pastry stick.

The next topper is very easy and can be created in three quick steps.

First, punch two circles from patterend paper (one should be slightly larger than the other). Then punch the moon and stars design from glittered paper using the Starry Night Lever Punch. Layer the circles and add the moon and stars in the center before affixing the assembled topper to the candy/pastry stick.

The last topper is designed to resemble Mardi Gras beads. Again, you will use two sizes of circle punches and cardstock.

Begin by punching eight circles of each size. Fold each punched circle in the middle.

Affix two folded circles together. The right side of one and the left side of the other will become attached. Repeat this step so that you have two of these pieces for each size of “bead”.

You will then affix these pieces to the candy/pastry stick. They will be “sandwiched” on either side of the stick, so that a complete sphere surrounds the stick when the pieces touch in the middle.

To create a fuller “bead,” affix the remaining folded circles in the middle of each quadrant of the sphere. This process is similar to putting the slices of an orange back together.

Once all of the pieces are in place, you should then have a multi-dimensional, bead-like topper. The larger is bead is on the bottom, the smaller on top.

Let the good times roll!
