Getting crafty with your Hanukkah celebration lends a handmade touch to this traditional Jewish holiday. Combining traditional elements with papercrafting techniques allows you to add your own dose of creativity!
Send a Hanukkah greeting
A handmade card is a special way to let a loved one know that you’re thinking of them. If you’re celebrating Hanukkah away from family or friends, these simple menorah cards will help to create a connection. Inspired by the tradition of lighting candles on the menorah each night of Hanukkah, this uses simple strips of cardstock to create a shimmery candelabra.
Create a Hanukkah countdown calendar
Create this countdown calendar to help kids keep track of the eight nights. Each cardstock pocket holds a tag that acts as a “coupon” – to be redeemed for a special treat or activity. Embellish the pockets with the Star of David by simply layering cardstock triangles.
Serve traditional foods
Plan menus using traditional foods such as potato latkes and jelly donughts (sufganiyot). Latkes are perhaps the most well-known food for Hanukkah. Traditional recipes can easily be found online, and are simple enough to have kids assist in the prep.
Throw a Hanukkah party
Invite friends over to celebrate! Decorations in the traditional colors of blue and white will add a festive flair. Ask guests to recite blessings before lighting candles on the menorah. Kids will enjoy the dreidel game, and singing Hanukkah songs. Give each guest a fun party favor by creating “cones” from patterned paper to hold chocolates and chocolate coins (gelt).
