We dream of all the ways we would like to improve different areas of life and, for some of us, this is the starting point of dreams for changes we want to make to our home.
There are some great organizational tools available through the internet to help us compile ideas, but having a physical organizational tool is also a necessity. Paint chips, fabric samples, pages ripped from magazines, shopping lists, there are always little pieces of the puzzle that don't fit into the electronic world or organization.
Instead of a book full of blank single sheets of paper, I decided to make my pages from 9 inch x 12 inch white mailing envelopes. I folded them in half, tucking the bottom edge of the envelope up under the flap.
Any kind of envelope can be used for a book like this.
To add stability to the fabric covers, I started with two 6.5 inch x 9.5 inch pieces of extra heavy chipboard.
Each cover was made by stitching two 7.5 inch x 10.5 inch panels of fabric together along 3 edges, clipping the corners to reduce bulk, and turning the cover right side out. I slipped the chipboard cover in through the open end.
I folded over the seam allowances on the opening of each cover and slip stitched the opening closed.
To make the cover embellishments, I used a punched heart as a loose pattern for the hearts, tracing the shape onto the back of fabric scraps and cutting them out using Fiskars Detail scissors. I did not cut on the tracing lines, using them only as a guide to keep the hearts uniform in height. The letters for the word HOME were cut freehand from wool felt.
To assemble the cover, I cut a 6.5 inch x 10 inch piece of muslin fabric and stitched a 6 inch x 9 inch piece of black denim in the center of it. I then stitched around the edges of the muslin to reduce fraying. I machine stitched the embellishments to the black rectangle and hand sewed 2 buttons in place of the "O" in HOME. I completed the cover by hand stitching it to the book cover.
Holes were punched in the covers and each of the envelopes.
And the book was bound with metal loose leaf rings.
Each of the envelopes in the book provides several surfaces to adhere things to, as well as an envelope end to slip magazine pages, receipts, or any other materials that I don't want to adhere to the pages.
