They bring nothing but joy to her sweet little face. But, summer doesn’t bring with it too many windy days. So, together, the two of us designed these delightful paper kite magnets so we can have a visual reminder on our fridge of all the happy kite flying memories we’ve made together as we wait for our next blustery opportunity. I’m sure you have many of the supplies needed already in your craft cabinet. Here’s how to make your very own:
First you’ll grab two popsicle sticks and adhere them together with a glue dot. You’ll want the horizontal stick to be slightly higher than centered on the vertical stick. Then wrap the embroidery floss or yarn several times around each stick and criss-crossed on the diagonal. Secure loose thread on the back side using a glue dot.
Lay your wrapped popsicle sticks onto a piece of cardstock and draw lines from each point to the next with a pen, and then remove the popsicle sticks.
Using the cassette punch set (or your favorite pop-up punches); punch several shapes from a variety of colors of cardstock to decorate your kite.
Adhere the punched pieces within the lines you’ve drawn onto the cardstock. To reduce the mess and sticky fingers, you may find mini glue dots to be your best adhesive. For some of the very detailed and very tiny pieces, a glue pen will be helpful.
Cut out your kite using a pair of decorative paper edgers.
Punch a hole with an 1/16” hole punch at the base of the kite.
Thread a 12” long ribbon through the hole leaving a 2” tail, then adhere the popsicle stick to the kite at all at all 4 points. Tie ribbon in a knot over the popsicle stick.
Cut three additional ribbons measuring 6” each. Knot them onto the 12” ribbon approximately ½” apart from each other. After knotting, trim ends to shorten.
Finally, attach a magnet to the back of the kite for display on any magnetic surface. Enjoy!
