I think we all have good intentions of doing fun, memory making activities with our children, or in my case grandchildren. But often, we get busy with life and time passes by and we miss opportunities to do special things with attention to detail.
I recently planned an outdoor tea party for Harper, Molly and Addison. I was almost giddy as ideas came to me and I started taking notes and sketching out the decorations and plans. It was such fun knowing that I was putting together such a special day for the girls that hopefully they will remember for a very long time.
Here's the thing about party planning - using a few simple Fiskars tools combined with bits of craft supplies, it's possible to create really beautiful custom details, with minimal cost. With the tools being nonconsumable, I’ve used them over and over, not just for crafts or scrapbooking, but many times over and over for entertaining.
I made napkin rings by simply stitching a 4 inch length of velvet ribbon and then accenting with a pattern paper scallop punch and sticker letter representing their initials. The girls were in awe of having their napkin rings personalized. Their ages are 3, 4 and 5 years, so they are all very aware of the letters in their names. Because we used cloth napkins and it was a special day, we even worked on a few manners.
I bought a very inexpensive pack of small paper bags to embellish for their treat bags. I used a Fiskars border punch along the top of the bags to create a more finished look. I embellished with colorful butterfly and flower punches, as well as letter stickers to spell their names. The bags took literally minutes to make, but the girls were truly impressed. They were so simple, that I thought they would be an excellent choice for an even larger gathering.
I created a tissue paper flower wreath using the Circle Template to trace circles that were then layered and added flower by flower to the preformed wreath shape.
Finally, the very homespun pennant banner was made with a vintage cutting quilt and Fiskars pinking scissors and the Circle Template again for the stitched flowers. My very favorite Fiskars tool is my pinking scissors. I couldn’t craft without them!
I made the napkin rings, wreath, treat bags and banner all on a Sunday afternoon. So simple. The thing that I was most curious about was how the girls would react to the details. I wondered if they would even notice. Their reaction did not disappoint! Harper saw the table and decor and declared it "a magical tea party". All of them seemed to relish the atmosphere as much as an adult would, if not more! The thing that surprised me more than anything was that they actually noticed EVERY detail. They sat for a long time, totally content with their peanut butter sandwiches, strawberry milk or pink lemonade and custom cookies. We actually had to encourage them to move to the front yard for more photos.
A couple of tips for throwing a little girl's tea party: Invite a preteen to help. I asked our oldest granddaughter Alexis if she would like to help and it made a huge difference. I was able to take photos while she refilled drinks and passed the sandwiches and cookies around. Also, I had the pretty little cookies made by a wonderful local cookie maker, Custom Cookies. She did them according to our color scheme and they were a huge hit and very affordable. The cookie shapes matched the punched shape and colors on the treat bags. Keeping the food simple worked out really well for our party.
