Using paper ephemera from the past, gives your present projects a new style and dimension that you may have never found before.

I love a good find. Whether it is just great deal, or something I have been searching for, I love when I find it. When you are looking at a flea market or junk store, you will find vintage treasures that you might have never thought to use on your scrapbook layouts and craft projects. Here are just a few items to look for next time you are shopping at your favorite antique market.

Old buttons can be just the right item you need for your paper crafting project. Many times they come in a variety of shapes and colors that are not like the one sold in the scrapbook stores. You can find a jar with a variety of buttons, but make sure you bring them home and wash them before use. They usually have dust and dirt that needs to be removed before using them in your projects.

Playing Cards

Old game cards, and playing cards are fun to add variety and layering to your layout. Use them to highlight a certain letter and/or number from your journaling or if it compliments your photos.

Ribbon, seam binding, rick rack, zippers, etc. These are all the different trims that you will find at your local junk store. Sometimes you even find trims that you are not sure what they were previously used for, but will go perfectly on your projects. The paper trim with the circles on this layout is a recent find, yet I have no idea what it was used for! A coin tape possibly? Anyone have any ideas?

Vintage Embellishments

Many of these types of items have been mass-produced as reproductions, but finding and using the originals is a lot more fun. I am especially enamored by milk caps and use them often as an embellishment on a scrapbook layout.  Add a pop dot to the back and it gives just the right dimension to your page.

Magazines & Books

Many times you can find a dictionary, children’s book, magazine, or ledger that is antique and has that vintage look which is perfect for so many current projects and trend. I enjoy using the printed paper to mat my pictures.

Make sure to use an archival mist on the paper items to ensure they are acid free and safe to use near your photos.

Don’t think that everything you find at the antique store is going to look old! I found these letters in a children’s game for less than $4. They are light, bright and look great on all styles of layouts. They are the perfect pop of color! Keep your eyes open. You will find things in the most interesting of places.

I hope this article has helped to give you some ideas of what to look for when you are out shopping for an old picture frame,  vase, or home décor piece. Don’t pass up on the vintage paper finds! You will find treasures to use throughout all your crafting projects.
