1) How long have you been crafting?
I’ve been crafting in one form or another since I was a little girl. I remember finding odds and ends around the house, gathering bits of yarn from my mother’s crochet bag and things from outside to use in my creations. They were interesting to say the least! In high school, I put together my first scrapbook filled with photos and journaling of the experiences and events from my senior year. Later, I got involved with painted wood crafts. I even had my own scroll saw and sold my work at local craft shows. It wasn’t until just after my first child’s birth in 1996 that I started really scrapbooking again when I found a magazine at a local craft store. Having a new baby and a little time on my hands inspired me to pull out my camera and start to scrapbook again.
2) Why did you start crafting?
My mother is very crafty and I grew up watching her knit, crochet and sew. Although I don’t quite have her level of talent in these crafts, it’s inspired me to be creative in my own way.
3) How long have you been on the Fiskars® Design Team?
Since January of 2006.
4) What are your favorite craft activities?
My favorite crafts involve anything to do with paper: scrapbooking, card making, altered projects and more. Give me the basics — paper, scissors and glue — and I’m very happy to spend hours crafting as a creative outlet for my ideas.
5) How do you define your crafting style/aesthetic?
I’d say the words that best describe my style are “detailed linear.” I like order and straight lines and have a tendency to be a planner too, but I also love for my projects to include tons of detail. Be it buttons, stitching, inking or whatever, I don’t feel like my project is complete without all the little details.
6) What is your favorite time of day to craft?
Early in the morning with a cup of coffee or tea to start me off is my favorite time to work on my projects. I like the natural light, the quiet and that I can start creating the ideas that have been rolling around in my brain overnight. Then again, I’m a night owl too and find that sometimes I get a second wind when it’s late and everyone is asleep.
7) What motivates/inspires you?
I find so much motivation and inspiration in seeing what other crafters are making in magazines and on the web. I may take inspiration from a sewing project I’ve seen and try a similar technique with paper instead of fabric. Or I’ll see a color combination in a scrapbook layout and it will inspire me to use those colors in a sewing project. When I see creativity from others, I feel like I can’t wait to get started on my own ideas.
8) If you could only have one Fiskars® tool, what would it be and why?
It would be very hard to pick only one Fiskars® tool. But aside from scissors and a trimmer, my other must-have tools would be the Fiskars® circle punch tools. I use them in virtually every project that I make and find that I can create almost anything with them — flowers, borders, paper piecings and more. They’re the tool I reach for again and again.
