1) When did you first start gardening?

I first started gardening in elementary school after I purchased a book about creating backyard habitats for wildlife.

2) What is your favorite plant in the garden?

My favorite plants are tall bearded irises — they take my breath away.

3) What is your proudest gardening moment?

My proudest gardening moment is eating an apple from a tree that I grew from a mere stick into a beautifully espaliered tree.

4) What tool could you not live without in your garden?

I don’t think I could live without my bypass pruners. I could dig holes without a trowel, if forced to do so, but it would be hard to keep my plants nicely shaped and healthy without good pruners.

5) What inspires you the most?

Whenever I see a butterfly, hummingbird or lizard visiting my balcony garden, I feel inspired to do more to support the wildlife we humans have displaced.
