1) When did you first start gardening?
I grew houseplants as a teen, but I really started gardening when I bought my first home in 1983. That’s a long time ago.
2) What is your favorite plant in the garden?
Roses and daylilies.
3) What is your proudest gardening moment?
When I first grew potatoes and served them to my family.
4) What tool could you not live without in your garden?
My angle hand weeder. I’ve had it for fifteen years or so. The design is also called a ken ho weeder. It is very sharp and gets beneath roots of weeds.
5) What inspires you the most?
Reading about gardening and taking photographs. Often, what I see through the lens enables me to frame a particular view and improve it.
Dee Nash is a freelance writer who gardens in the English cottage style on seven and a half acres outside of Guthrie, Oklahoma. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma.
She credits her grandmother as her greatest gardening influence, and from the time she could walk, she toddled after her in her garden in Commerce, Oklahoma. As a teenager, Dee grew houseplants under grow lights in her bedroom and helped her mother craft complicated macramé hangers to hold even more precious fauna. On her own, she gardened everywhere she lived: on balconies, in her dorm room and later her office, along within small beds just outside her front door. When she moved to the country over twenty years ago, she finally had the space to design and build the garden of her dreams. It includes geometric beds and formal borders filled to the brim with cottage-style plants.
She has over 90 rose bushes, disease-resistant cultivars which she grows as organically as possible. She’s learned to live with a bit of blackspot and refuses to spray. Last spring, with her husband’s help, she built a raised potager (kitchen garden) where she sits and gardens without needing to kneel in the soil. Its centerpiece is a beautiful red fountain.
A frequent contributor to Oklahoma Gardener magazine, she’s also written for Organic Gardening magazine, Fine Gardening, flower magazine, Birds and Blooms, The Edmond Sun, The Oklahoman, Oklahoma Horticulture Society’s Horticulture Horizons, and The Daylily Journal. She also writes and produces her own garden blog, Red Dirt Ramblings and blogs for Lowe’s Garden Grow Along blog.
