As we looked at the arrival of September, which is National Sewing Month, we wondered…
What can people make for $15.00 worth of supplies?
It was a question we came back to over and over again and finally we decided to try and answer it with a challenge. So, I emailed some sewers and issued this call: Go to your local Wal-Mart and purchase $15.00 worth of sewing supplies – fabric, thread, stuffing, etc… - and show us what you can do. This did not include the cost of tools, just the actual materials used in the project.
Then, I realized, if I am issuing the challenge, maybe I should try it, too. I am not an avid or skilled sewer by any means. I am, however, in love with fabric. I love the colors, patterns, textures, designs, and ultimate possibilities that can unfold from a bolt of beautiful fabric. So I took up the challenge and spent my money at the store, too.
My project is a simple one with hand stitched flowers. I love to create these flowers and add them to t-shirts, necklaces, headbands, and more. They are simple to make and look great! Even a beginning sewer like me can handle these – no machine is required.
You will need a plain base fabric – I used plain white cotton flannel, pretty fabric, needle, and thread, as well as a great pair of scissors and a rotary cutter and ruler.
Cut your fabric into about 1” strips. Then hand stitch the center and then begin rolling the fabric, tacking it every inch or so as you loop it around. Once you get to the end, trim off the excess, tack it down, and cut it out.
I made multiples of these and then began to arrange them on the pre-made apron I had purchased in my budget from the store.
I then tacked them on in place. It was quick, easy, and a fun way to take a plain apron and make it shine!
For the non-sewers out there – I do have a confession to make to all of you… if you are like me and love fabric, but can’t sew, Fabri-Tac or another fabric glue works well on projects like this. You can do a non-sewing version just as easily as a sewn one.
Here’s my receipt. Just less than $20!
