Presenting someone with a gift in a handmade fabric bag may eliminate that convenience, but the exceptional look and feel of it can be worth the extra effort. And since the bag is durable enough to be reused, and pretty enough to be set out on display, it has the bonus of being a gift in itself.
Using the Fiskars 45 mm Rotary Cutter, 6.5 inch x 24.5 inch Acrylic Ruler, and 18 x 24 inch cutting mat to cut 2 pieces of fabric to 16 inches x 14 inches. Cut a 3 inch x 3 inch square from the lower corners of both pieces of fabric.
With the fabric pieces right sides together, stitch a 1/2 inch seam along the bottom and both side of the bag, backstitching at the beginning and end of each seam. Do not stitch the edges of the cutout squares. Press the seams open with an iron.
Opening one of the square cutouts at the base of the fabric panels, pinch the opening closed by matching the seams from the previous step together. Pin the layers together. Repeat with the other square cutout.
Stitch the now closed cutouts to create seams for the bottom of the bag. Turn the bag right side out.
Repeat the previous steps to create a lining for the bag. With the lining still inside out, place it inside the outer layer of the bag. Match the side seams up and pin the layers together.
Straighten the layers of fabric so they are without wrinkles or folds in the corners of the bag. Cut a dowel rod into four 8.75 inch lengths.
Place one length of dowel rod in each corner of the bag. Using a zipper foot on your sewing machine pressed up against the dowel rod, stitch a seam to encase it, backstitching at the beginning and end of the seam.
Fold the top edges of the bag and liner over 1/2 inch toward the outside of the bag. Fold them over 1/2 inch again and pin them in place. Stitch the hem in place, making sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of each seam.
Use the Fuse Creativity System™ to create a gift tag. Embellish it with shapes punched using the Tag, You're It Squeeze Punch, and the 1/4 inch hand punch. String a short length of jute or ribbon through the hole.
Fold the top of the bag over to expose the lining. Stitch a large button to the section that is folded over. Hang the gift tag from the button.
