Of course, you are a thoughtful guest, and you always bring something special and beautiful to give to your host or hostess. Right? Well, if you're looking for a gift idea for a hostess who loves flowers or gardening, why not say "thanks" with a basket of hellebores? Word on the street is that they're the de rigeur gift in Europe.
What's so great about hellebores? Depending on the variety, they are blooming at the right time of year for holiday gifts. Be sure to pick a variety that will bloom in November or December so that your gift will look it's best. Unfortunately, try as I might, I wasn't able coax mine into bloom for this post. But you can see from the photos on the tags that they have beautiful blooms. Hellebores are also part to full shade plants, so they'll be okay indoors for the winter.
To make a flowering gift basket, you'll need a basket, decorative moss, small decorative pinecones, two hellebores, one variegated ivy, Comfort Grip™ Floral Snips, and one small plastic trash bag or grocery bag. Gift baskets can often be overpriced, so look for sales at your local craft store or you might even find a nice one at the dollar store. All of the supplies listed cost about $45.
The gift basket was quick and simple to put together. I purchased the supplies and put the basket together in about an hour and a half. So if you're a procrastinator, this is the gift idea for you! Simply line the basket with the plastic bag to prevent water from damaging the basket, and then place the plants artfully in the basket. Tuck the moss around the plants to hide their nursery pots and any gaps between the plants. Sprinkle the pinecones around and place the snips off to one side, and you're done!
