It is an art form involving the application of cut decorative papers to a surface with a decoupage medium such Mod Podge, then layering on an extra coat or two of the medium to protect it from dirt, dust and fingerprints.
When it comes to decoupage, nothing is safe from being permanently adhered. You can use any type of paper, such as dictionary pages, sheet music, tissue paper, wrapping paper, scrapbook papers, origami papers, doilies and even leftover wall paper. In fact, I’ve used many of these items to create this set of decoupage Easter eggs. Here’s how you can make your own.
For the first step, you’ll need wooden eggs or paper mache eggs, acrylic craft paint, foam paint brushes, and a spare piece of paper to protect your work surface.
Paint the eggs with a thin coat of acrylic paint, allow to dry for 10 to 15 minutes, and then apply another coat of paint.
Gather the paper materials that you will decoupage onto the eggs along with your decoupage medium. Lightweight papers are easiest to work with when applying to a non-flat surface like with these eggs. You’ll also want to use your scissors to cut the papers into small workable pieces, no larger than the size of a quarter. As far as the medium you choose to apply your papers, there are different varieties depending on the type of finish you prefer and these include: matte finish, glossy finish and even a glittered finish.
Work on a waxed-paper covered surface and start by brushing the medium onto the egg and then apply the paper over the medium smoothing any wrinkles with your fingers. You may find it helpful to also apply medium on top of the paper as you smooth the wrinkles. If you have a stubborn (usually heavier-weight) paper that doesn’t want to adhere, hold pressure on it until the medium becomes a bit tacky and you’ll find it snap into submission a bit better.
You may also consider applying small pieces of mesh, fabric, snippets of ribbon, and paper flowers. Once all your papers are added, and before the medium dries completely, sprinkle your eggs with fine glitter for some added sparkle.
Leave to dry overnight on the waxed-paper. Then, you can add even more personality by embellishing with wrapped jewelry wire cut with your Cuts+More™ scissors, small self-adhesive pearls, and layered punched flowers.
