Woodsy and Natural Bird Cage

Start this craft project by stepping outside!

I love any craft project that begins by stepping outside, and gathering a few supplies from Mother Nature.   I am lucky to live in the Northwest, where there’s an abundance of great materials just outside my door – which makes inspiration come easy.

A recent blustery day took down a limb from a neighbor’s tree. I grabbed my pruners, trimmed off a few twigs, and this Woodsy and Natural Bird Cage was born.

Begin by snipping a few twigs approximately 10-12 inches with a pair of pruners. Trim a mix of straight and curved pieces.

Snip a few twigs with your Power Gear Pruner

Put a small dab of hot glue on the end of one of your twigs and attach it to a round of birch, with the tip of the twig bending in. Hold in place until the glue cools.

Glue your remaining twigs to the perimeter of the base to create the cage. Be patient in this process and allow the glue to cool completely before attaching the next twig.  At the points where the branch tips cross, add a small drop of glue to help reinforce the structure.

Wrap a few bits of moss at the base of the twigs to conceal the glue.

Punch a few butterflies from a patterned cardstock and glue them to the cage along with a few paper flower blooms.

Cut two birds from a thick, heavy felt using your Fuse Creativity® system. Glue the two layers of felt together, and attach the wings using fabric glue.

Tuck your bird between the twig “bars” of his cage.
