I add bits of fabric and stitching to nearly every scrapbook layout I make. Occasionally I'll create almost an entire layout from fabric. I don't think anything else compares to the dimension and texture it adds!
While I love the softness of fabric, it's not really practical to try and assemble a layout on a fabric base so I always start with a sheet of cardstock and adhere fabric to it using fusible web.
Rather than adhere a single piece of fabric for my background on this layout I opted to cut it into 2 inch squares. This can be done using the Fiskars 45 mm Comfort Grip Rotary cutter and 3.5 x 18.5 inch Acrylic Ruler. These can be stitched down to the cardstock base.
My embellishments were created using a variety of fabric and Fiskars Shape Templates. The template is placed on the back side of the fabric, traced, and cut out with Fiskars Razor-edge Softgrip Scissors. Adhering these shapes with fusible web would have prevented the circles of fabric from buckling and wrinkling as I stitched them down but I wanted an imperfect look so I just held them down with my fingers as I stitched around the perimeters.
I even printed my photo and journaling on fabric. Spraying a sheet of cardstock with temporary adhesive and adhering a piece of fabric to it before running it through my inkjet printer made this easy to do.
I finished the layout by adding a title of chipboard letters. These break up the fabric theme but they work with the look of the layout and, because of the intricacy of small letters, it was just easier to use chipboard letters.
If you've never tried using fabric on a layout, consider adding a few shapes as embellishments or create a layered photo mat with a couple of coordinating fabrics.
12 x 12 sheet of cardstock, 12 x 12 piece of fabric for background, fabric scraps for cutting hearts and circles, thread, chipboard letters for title.
