Whether it is your go-to bag for shopping or a gift for someone, this simple and chic crossbody purse is a great bag for everyday of the year.
I don’t know about you, but Christmas for my family means new pajamas. My children really do love a new pair of cosy winter pajamas to keep them snug during excited slumber on Christmas Eve and there’s no denying a new pair of PJs looks cute on Christmas Day morning and in the photographic opportunity it brings
I wanted to make a set for my son who recently turned 7 and when I purchased the book Sewing For Boys by Shelly Figueroa and Karen LePage I knew that the Goodnight Sweetheart pajamas would be perfect for him. It can sometimes be hard to find really nice patterns for boys and I confess I sew many more things for my daughter than I do my son. Buying this book has really helped me redress the balance and I found the pajamas pattern to be straightforward with clear directions and nice details. Best of all, the finished pajamas are really wonderful!
The book contains all the full-size patterns you need for every project. I found the pieces of the pajama pattern and traced them carefully onto pattern tracing paper, transferred all the marking and cut them out.
I decided to use a soft cotton flannel for my pajamas and I found that using a plaid print helped me line up all my pattern pieces nicely so that the print even matched at the seams.
My favorite pair of scissors for cutting fabric pattern pieces are my Fiskars 8” forged scissors.
They are feel solidly built and cut easily, even through several layers of heavyweight fabric.
This year I am really enjoying a pale blue and red color combination for the holidays, so I knew I would add a bright red piping and buttons to these pajamas (red is also my son’s favorite color so it makes him happy when I use it). I think this splash of color really adds something special to the overall look.
Finishing a garment and having to add buttonholes at the last stage is always a daunting prospect (at least for me) and I recommended doing several ‘test runs’ on a scrap of the fabric you are using. My sewing machine measures buttonholes automatically and still I fret that somehow I will mess it up, but I have learned that I’ll never make progress or improvement if I don’t at least try!
The pajama pants are finished with an elasticated waist and I like to use the safety pin in my Sew Taxi to thread the elastic through its casing. Not only do I find this the most efficient way to thread the elastic (I am not a patient person) but since I always return the safety pin to its place in the Sew Taxi, I always know where it is!
And there you have it. Nothing says Christmas like a new pair of cosy jammies! I am really happy with how these turned out and more importantly, I know my son will love them.
