Have you been using the Fiskars seasonal punches? I have to confess that I am more of a sewer than I am papercrafter, but when I see something as cute as these punches, I know that come what may, I need to find a way to use them. I found the Perfect Pair punch completely irresistible, so I decided to use it to decorate a set of handmade linen dish towels and napkins. These would make a lovely gift for someone, but plan on making a second set, because I’m sure you’ll be wanting to keep some for yourself!
I decided to use linen to make these dishtowels. It is a favorite fabric of mine and is super absorbent, which makes it perfect for kitchen linens.
First, cut the fabric to size. My dish towels measure 16” x 25” and my napkins are 16” x 16”. I find it best to use my rotary cutter to cut linen because it has a tendency to shift and stretch. Keeping the linen flat on the cutting mat and holding it down with a ruler as you cut, minimizes movement and you can cut more accurately.
Next, I took a piece of freezer paper and cut it to the width of my linen pieces. I folded the freezer paper in half with the waxy sides facing, and with a ruler and pencil, marked 2” intervals along the folded edge.
Then I used the Perfect Pair punch to punch the shape at each marked interval. Because you are punching through 2 layers of tough freezer paper, I found it best to give a short, sharp punch through the layers.
After punching all the way along the edge of the freezer paper, I opened up the fold and cut it in half. I ironed one half to one of my pieces of linen using a hot dry iron.
The freezer paper will adhere to the fabric so that you can use a fabric paint to paint inside the shapes.
Once the paint is completely dry, peel off the freezer paper. Depending on the kind of fabric paint you use, you may have to heat set your design.
I prefer to hem my dishtowels and napkins in the final step, after painting the fabric, though you can do it first if you prefer. On the back of my dishtowels I sewed a piece of tape or ribbon into one of the corners so that it can be conveniently hung on a hook.
Though I used the Perfect Pair punch for my design, there are many lovely holiday punches to chose from, and by switching color or design, you are sure to find a combination that fits in with your holiday decor.
