I don't know about you, but with a household to run, meals to prepare and two small children to play with, Iím always looking out for ways to be more efficient and to stay ëone step aheadí of the chaos. The onset of spring and all the cleaning and organizing inspiration it brings, got me thinking about how better to manage my household chores, such as laundry, so that thereís more time for the fun stuff. My hope with these fun laundry bags is that my children will enjoy the novelty of using them so much that they will happily put their own dirty laundry away! Next step: how to teach a five year old to turn on the washing machine and hang the laundry out to dry!?!<Insert photo ñ Laundry bags>I sewed these canvas laundry bags with a French seam that encloses the raw edges of the fabric and gives the bags a clean inside finish. I also used a twin needle across the top of the bags for the drawstring casing, for strength and durability, though you could also use a single needle if you prefer. I brightened up the plain canvas fabric with some fun appliques using cheerful prints I thought my children would like.
1. Take 1/2 of canvas and fold in half with wrong sides together so that the short ends meet.
2. Stitch 1/2" from the raw edge.
3. Trim seam allowances to 1/8" from the stitching and press open with the point of an iron.
4. Turn the laundry bag inside out with the right sides of the fabric together and press along the seam line.
5. Stitch along seams 1/2" from edge.
6. To create a gusset bottom to the bag, keep the bag inside out. Mark a 3" square in each bottom corner of the bag with tailors chalk or erasable marker and cut out.
7. Open out the holes you cut and press the bottom edge of the bag towards the side edge. Pin in place and sew along the line.
8. Cut small pieces of print fabric for applique on the front of the bag. Use fabric glue to adhere applique to canvas then stitch in place with a zig zag stitch.
9. To make the drawstring casing, fold over the top edge of the bag 1/2" and press. Fold again 1 1/2" (adjust depending on the width of your cord - mine was 1/2") and stitch closed, leaving a 3" hole.
10. Thread cord through the casing using the safety pin in the Sew Taxi and knot ends together to secure.
1/2" yard canvas (or other heavy weight fabric) for each bag
Small piece of print fabric for appliques (if required)
1 yard thick cord
Tailors chalk or erasable marker
